Welcome to the official portal of the historic Shri Lehra Devi Mandir (Lehra Durga Mandir), an ancient spiritual sanctuary nestled in the serene, ancient woods of Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh. Revered as a powerful center of Shakti worship, the temple stands as a bridge between timeless Vedic mythology and modern-day devotion.

The Sacred Abode of
Maa Lehra Devi

The Mahabharata Era (Over 5,000 Years Ago)

According to sacred Hindu traditions, the origin of this shrine dates back to the Dvapara Yuga. During their period of exile (Agyatvas), the Pandavas sought refuge in these dense forests, which were then known as Ardravan (or Adravan).

It was during this time that the legendary warrior Arjuna established this sacred site:

  • Divine Meditation: Arjuna performed deep penance and worshipped the Goddess as Vanadevi (the Goddess of the Forest) to seek blessings for the upcoming war.

  • Boon of Divine Powers: Pleased with his unwavering devotion, Mother Bhagwati Durga appeared before him and bestowed numerous unmatched, invincible divine powers (Aamogh Shaktis) upon him.

  • Establishment of the Shrine: Following the direct command of the Goddess, Arjuna established the pindis (sacred stone representations of the deity). The site originally became famous as 'Adaruna Devi Than' to honour this event.

Divine Legends & Miracles

The Legend of Yudhishthira & The Yaksha

The surrounding forests hold further significance in epic history. It is widely believed that the scenic lake near the temple is the exact spot where Yudhishthira successfully answered the complex questions of the Yaksha. His wisdom pleased the Yaksha, allowing him to restore the lives of his brothers (Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva).

Historical Footprints & Modern Structure

  • Ancient Chinese Chronicles: The spiritual significance of this grove was historically recorded by the famous Chinese traveler Hiuen-Tsang in his travelogues (Si-Yu-Ki).

  • Modern Architecture: The brick-and-mortar temple complex standing today was constructed approximately 200 years ago, around the early 19th century, transforming the open-air jungle shrine into a formal structure.

The Story of the Boatman

Local folklore holds that the Goddess once tested a young boatman on the Pawah River. When he failed to recognize her divine nature, his boat sank. Upon his sincere repentance, the Goddess saved him and manifested her divine presence at the current temple site. To this day, devotees pay their respects to the historical remnants linked to this legend.

The Leaping Flames

A unique aspect of the temple is the natural phenomenon of a sacred flame (Akhand Jyoti) that has burned continuously for generations without any external fuel source, drawing scientists and devotees alike.
